Our Experience Bosnia Expedition is a journey into Bosnia’s history, heart and hospitality — guided by people who treat you like family, not visitors.
This is one of Halal Travel Guide’s most loved trips — and the reviews all say the same thing: you come for Bosnia, but you leave with so much more. Travellers talk about arriving as strangers and leaving with real friendships. They talk about laughing on the bus, deep conversations over meals, and the way our local team open their homes, their stories and their hearts. Bosnia is a country still carrying layers of pain and resilience, and you feel that through the people who guide you.
We visit the places that define Bosnia’s story: Sarajevo’s Old Town, Mostar’s cobblestone streets, the lessons of Srebrenica, the stunning Neretva River...You’ll hear history from people who lived it, prayed through it, rebuilt after it — and who share it with honesty, warmth and humour.
If you want a travel experience rich in history, full of heart, and rooted in community, this is it. Bosnia stays with you — not because of one moment, but because of how the whole experience makes you feel: seen, welcomed, connected.
This is why so many people return.
And why so many first-time guests become part of the HTG family.
What you'll experience
This trip is ideal for travellers of all ages who wish to deepen their understanding of Bosnia’s history, culture, and local life. Families with young / older children are welcome, as well as couples, friends and solo travellers.

Welcome to Halal Travel Guide! Please take a moment to read these terms before booking. By booking with us, you’re confirming your understanding and agreement with the policies below, which are designed to help ensure a smooth, enjoyable experience for everyone.
1. BOOKING & PAYMENT TERMS
DEPOSIT & PAYMENT SCHEDULE:
● A £100 deposit is needed to secure your booking. This deposit helps us hold your spot and is non-refundable and non-transferable.
● After securing your spot with the £100 deposit, we ask for a further £300 contribution towards the trip cost within 6 weeks. This, too, is non-refundable, but it helps confirm your commitment to joining us on the journey!
FOR INSTALLMENT PLANS:
● If you’d like to pay in instalments, we’re happy to offer up to 3 equal payments at no extra cost. Any payments made after the initial deposit are non-refundable to ensure that your place is set, and all instalments must be completed 8 weeks before the trip.
FINAL PAYMENT:
● For all trips, we kindly ask for the remaining balance no later than 8 weeks before departure.
● For last-minute bookings (within 2 months of departure), we’ll need full payment 6 weeks before departure or within two weeks after booking, whichever comes first.
TRAVEL INSURANCE:
● We strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance at the time of booking to protect against any unexpected cancellations, disruptions, or health issues. Halal Travel Guide does not cover these risks, whether or not insurance is purchased. Opting for insurance provides peace of mind that you’re covered in case of last-minute changes to your plans.
2. CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS
CANCELLATION TIMELINE & FEES:
● If you cancel more than 10 weeks before your trip, we’ll retain the deposit and any contributions made up to that point, to cover any non-recoverable costs we have incurred up to that point. We will refund you/not charge you the remaining balance of your trip.
● Cancelling 4 weeks before departure means a 50% charge of the total trip cost, while cancelling within 3 weeks means a 100% charge.
● To keep things simple, we’re unable to offer refunds or credits after your trip has started, as we have already paid our local partners and vendors by this point.
TRANSFERRING YOUR SPOT:
● If something comes up and you can’t join us, you’re welcome to transfer your spot to someone else! Just note that arranging a replacement is up to you, and any payments made to date are non-refundable.
3. PRE-TRIP ESSENTIALS
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
● For a smooth journey, please check the entry requirements of your destination, such as visas and health checks. While we’re here to support, it’s ultimately up to you to confirm any requirements.

Settle into the heart of Bosnia with a warm welcome in Sarajevo. Once you’ve checked in, take your time to unwind and get to know your fellow travellers. Hotel check-in begins from 2 PM.
Today is a free day, so you’re welcome to explore at your own pace. You can wander through the charming Old Town (Baščaršija), try your first taste of Bosnian food and coffee, or simply relax at the hotel and enjoy the facilities.
Overnight in Sarajevo
Today you'll wake up in Bosnia's capital city, where powerful and influential historical figures have permanently left their mark on the city.
Our expert local guide will walk you through the Tunnel of Hope and the cobblestone streets of the Bascarsija, where you can hear a muezzin make the call to prayer from the minaret of Gazi Husrev Beg mosque.
Today we'll be hosting you for lunch in this beautiful old city centre, sharing tales from this historic city. You'll also have some free time this afternoon to explore the traditional handmade crafts stalls and bakeries.
Overnight in Sarajevo
Today is the day we visit the memorial site of Srebrenica-Potocari, where at least 8, 372 victims were murdered in July 1995.
The worst event to take place on European soil since WWII, you’ll hear from a survivor exactly what it was like to be Muslim in Bosnia during the war. By visiting this memorial site you’re taking part in the necessary effort to keep these stories alive for future generations to learn from.
After the visit, we’ll return to Sarajevo, where you’ll have the evening free to explore the city at your own pace.
Overnight in Sarajevo
Today, we leave Sarajevo behind and head into Bosnia’s breathtaking natural landscapes for a day of adventure. Depending on the season and weather, you will either enjoy a peaceful hiking experience or an exhilarating rafting trip, each designed to showcase Bosnia’s scenic beauty.
Rafting Option: Join us on a rafting trip along Bosnia’s crystal-clear rivers. Glide through lush landscapes, experience the rush of the river, and enjoy the peace of being surrounded by nature.
Hiking Option: Our hiking trail offers serene paths through green valleys and mountains, with stops to appreciate Bosnia’s untouched nature.
Scenic Drive to Mostar: After our adventure, we continue on to Mostar, where you'll check into the hotel and relax after a day filled with activity.
Note: We will confirm the outdoor activity to you closer to the trip.
Tonight, enjoy free time to explore Mostar's Old Town at your own pace.
Overnight in Mostar
Today you'll explore the beauty of the Herzegovina region, starting in Mostar's Old Ottoman-era centre. Mostar was the site of fierce battles during the 1990's war, where many mosques, minarets, and even the famous Stari Most, were shelled by separatists. You'll learn more about the significance of this beautiful city, before heading for lunch and salaat at Blagaj Dervish Lodge, a beautiful hideaway located on the source of the river Buna. You'll want to spend some time here enjoying the beauty and peace of this location.
We’ll then make our way back to Sarajevo. After checking into our hotel in Sarajevo, the evening is yours. Enjoy free time to explore the city one last time, shop for souvenirs, or relax with your travel companions.
Overnight in Sarajevo
After breakfast, we’ll take you back to Sarajevo International Airport for your return flight home.
Should you wish to extend your stay in Bosnia, let us know and we can assist you with accommodation, transport and anything else you require.
Thank you for travelling with us!
Who leads the trip?
Our local HTG group Leader, Nedim, supported by Melissa, will be your leaders, guides, driver and local hosts for this trip. They are both your main points of contact from arrival through airport drop-off, with local Bosnian guides at specific sites.
Who tends to come on this trip?
A genuine mix. Solo travellers, couples, families, friends travelling together. First-time solo travellers are well-represented. The shared thread is wanting a trip that doesn't compromise on faith, modesty, or substance.
I've never travelled solo before — is this a good first trip?
It's one of the most common first solo trips our guests pick. The group is small, the days are structured, the group leader handles logistics, and you're not navigating an unfamiliar country alone.
Is this trip suitable for non-Muslims?
The trip is designed for Muslim travellers — prayer is built into the daily rhythm, halal food is a given, and the itinerary is centred on Bosnia's Islamic heritage. Non-Muslim travellers who are comfortable in that environment and respectful of the group's ethos are welcome.
How is the hiking-or-rafting decision made?
Your group leader makes the call based on weather and river conditions, usually the evening before. Both options are designed to be accessible — the rafting is a calm, scenic stretch (not whitewater) and the hike is moderate.
What do I wear for the rafting day?
A modest swimwear for men and a burkini for women are ideal for this activity. The rafting centre will provide you with full length wetsuits, swimming shoes, helmets and life-jackets. Bring a towel and a full change of clothes — you'll want them.
What is the Srebrenica visit like, and how should I prepare emotionally?
The visit to the Srebrenica-Potočari Memorial Site on Day 4 includes hearing from a survivor about their experience during the 1992–95 war. It is one of the most affecting parts of the trip. Come with an open heart. You are encouraged to read a little about the history beforehand — we have free resources on the HTG website.
Please hold the martyrs, survivors, and their families in your prayers.
What's the Tunnel of Hope?
The underground tunnel that Bosniaks dug during the 1992-95 siege to move food, medicine, and people in and out of the besieged city. Visiting a preserved section with a local guide is one of the most affecting parts of the trip.
What is there to do during the Day 5 free evening in Sarajevo?
Most guests do one of three things: dinner in Baščaršija (the old town), browsing the bazaars, or finding a quiet spot for sunset and the call to prayer. Your group leader can point you to places depending on what you feel like.
How much walking is involved day to day?
Around four to six hours on your feet most days. Sarajevo and Mostar are old towns with cobbled streets, hills, and the occasional steep step. Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes are essential — this isn't the trip to wear in new ones.
Can the itinerary change?
The programme is a flexible guide. Your group leader may adjust the order or timing of visits if weather, site closures, traffic, or other circumstances make it sensible to do so. The aim is always to give you the best possible experience of each destination — not to stick rigidly to a printed schedule.
What currency does Bosnia use?
The Bosnian Convertible Mark (BAM, sometimes written KM). It's pegged to the Euro at roughly 1 EUR = 1.95 BAM.
Can I get BAM before I travel?
Usually not — most UK and US banks don't stock it. Bring Euros, GBP or USD and exchange on arrival. We'll take you to a reliable exchange point on Day 1.
Can I use my card?
Increasingly, yes. Most hotels, restaurants and larger shops in Sarajevo and Mostar take card. Smaller cafés, market stalls and taxi drivers expect cash. Carry some BAM with you throughout.
Roughly how much spending money do I need?
Most guests budget €150-200 for the week to cover dinners (not included), souvenirs, coffees and tips. Bosnia is genuinely affordable — a sit-down meal is usually €8-15 a head.
What plugs does Bosnia use?
European two-pin (Type C and F). UK travellers need a UK-to-EU adaptor. Hotel rooms often have only one or two accessible sockets, so a small multi-socket plug is worth packing if you're charging a phone, camera and power bank.
Is Wi-Fi reliable?
Yes, in all the hotels and most cafés. For data on the go, see the Airalo note on our main FAQ — it works well across Bosnia.
What's the dress code for mosque visits?
You'll need to cover your head, shoulders, arms and legs. A pashmina or large scarf you can throw over an outfit and tuck in your day bag is the easiest setup - bring one and you're covered for every mosque on the trip.
What about the rest of the trip?
Relaxed and practical. You're walking a lot, often hot during the day and cooler in the evenings. Loose trousers or maxi skirts, lightweight layers, and a light jacket cover most of it.
How are the daily prayers organised?
We follow the sunnah of combining and shortening prayers (jam' and qasr) while travelling — usually timed with our lunch stops. Maghrib and Isha are typically prayed at the hotel. You'll also visit several historic mosques along the way where prayer is naturally part of the visit.
Do I need to bring my own prayer mat?
A small travel mat can be useful when you need to pray in your hotel room or when you're out during the trip.
What's the weather actually like?
Sarajevo’s climate and weather is similar to London, particularly in spring and autumn evenings. Mostar is warmer than both — properly hot in summer (35°C+). Because you'll feel both cities in one trip, layers matter more than they would for a single-city break.
Do I need waterproofs?
For spring and autumn departures, yes — a light waterproof jacket or compact umbrella. Summer trips usually don't need them.
Is there anything specific I should pack that's easy to forget?
A few things our guests consistently wish they'd brought: a pashmina or large scarf for mosques, a UK-to-EU adaptor (and a multi-socket plug), a refillable water bottle, broken-in walking shoes, and a small day bag for water, sunscreen and your scarf.
Do I need a visa for Bosnia?
It depends on your passport. US, UK and EU passport holders: no visa required for stays up to 90 days.
Other passports: check with the Bosnian embassy in your country, or contact us and we’ll point you in the right direction.
Are tips expected?
Tips aren't included in your trip price, but they're standard in the region and a meaningful way to thank your driver and guides. As a guideline, around £2/$4 per day for the driver and £4/$8 per day for the local guide, given on their final day with the group.
Drop us a line at hello@halaltravelguide.net and a real person will get back to you, usually within a few working days.
