Winter Light: Andalusia Adventure

Step into the light this winter.

Y'all voted for us to organise an Andalusia tour this winter, so of course we had to deliver!

Joining us on our Andalusia Adventure is Brother Sami Hamdi, who'll share why Al-Andalus still matters today and what we can learn and implement from its legacy.

This isn't your regular 'intro' to Andalusia tour. This isn't a winter sun getaway, either, although Spain in January is beautiful - with fewer tourists, short, sunny days, crisp weather, and oranges ripe on the trees.

This is an invitation to immerse yourself in the stories of scholars, scientists, and soldiers who changed the face and future of Europe. You'll do this using all five senses on this trip; prepare to immerse yourself in the history, art, architecture, food and flavours of Al Andalus.

We are handpicking premium local hotels across Seville, Cordoba and Granada, and we'll be prioritising easy, walkable access to the Old Town, where possible. We will visit a beautiful selection of halal, seafood, and vegetarian cafes and restaurants where you'll enjoy delicious meals made using traditional recipes and locally sourced ingredients. This trip is open to couples, solo travellers and families looking for connection, conversation, culture and delicious cuisine this Winter.

What you can expect

  • Inspiring Talks from Brother Sami Hamdi;

  • Beautiful hotels hand-picked for their location, design or history;

  • A selection of curated meals cooked with love by our local Syrian, Mexican and Spanish friends;

  • Visits to the Mezquita de Cordoba, Medinat Zahra, Alhambra;

  • Explore Islamic art and architecture;

  • Meet and connect with local inheritors of Al Andalus.

Practical notes

  • February light: Crisp mornings, softer afternoons, shorter days; quieter monuments.

  • Walking: Light-to-moderate on cobbles and gentle hills (Albayzín).

  • Pack light: Be prepared to use intercity trains and walk on cobblestone streets with your suitcase. A small to medium-sized 4 wheel suitcase is ideal.

2026 Trip Date

Departure: Friday 13th November 2026, Malaga International Airport

Terms & Conditions of Booking

Welcome to Halal Travel Guide! Please take a moment to read these terms before booking. By booking with us, you’re confirming your understanding and agreement with the policies below, which are designed to help ensure a smooth, enjoyable experience for everyone.

1. BOOKING & PAYMENT TERMS

DEPOSIT & PAYMENT SCHEDULE:

● A £100 deposit is needed to secure your booking. This deposit helps us hold your spot and is non-refundable and non-transferable.

● After securing your spot with the £100 deposit, we ask for a further £300 contribution towards the trip cost within 6 weeks. This, too, is non-refundable, but it helps confirm your commitment to joining us on the journey!

FOR INSTALLMENT PLANS:

● If you’d like to pay in instalments, we’re happy to offer up to 3 equal payments at no extra cost. Any payments made after the initial deposit are non-refundable to ensure that your place is set, and all instalments must be completed 8 weeks before the trip.

FINAL PAYMENT:

● For all trips, we kindly ask for the remaining balance no later than 8 weeks before departure.

● For last-minute bookings (within 2 months of departure), we’ll need full payment 6 weeks before departure or within two weeks after booking, whichever comes first.

TRAVEL INSURANCE:

● We strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance at the time of booking to protect against any unexpected cancellations, disruptions, or health issues. Halal Travel Guide does not cover these risks, whether or not insurance is purchased. Opting for insurance provides peace of mind that you’re covered in case of last-minute changes to your plans.

2. CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS

CANCELLATION TIMELINE & FEES:

● If you cancel more than 10 weeks before your trip, we’ll retain the deposit and any contributions made up to that point, to cover any non-recoverable costs we have incurred up to that point. We will refund you/not charge you the remaining balance of your trip.

● Cancelling 4 weeks before departure means a 50% charge of the total trip cost, while cancelling within 3 weeks means a 100% charge.

● To keep things simple, we’re unable to offer refunds or credits after your trip has started, as we have already paid our local partners and vendors by this point.

TRANSFERRING YOUR SPOT:

● If something comes up and you can’t join us, you’re welcome to transfer your spot to someone else! Just note that arranging a replacement is up to you, and any payments made to date are non-refundable.

3. PRE-TRIP ESSENTIALS

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

● For a smooth journey, please check the entry requirements of your destination, such as visas and health checks. While we’re here to support, it’s ultimately up to you to confirm any requirements.

SCREENING & HEALTH:

● After booking, all guests go through a quick screening process. If anything prevents your participation, don’t worry—we’ll refund your deposit.

● To help us prepare for any special needs, please let us know about any health considerations when booking. This information is confidential and only helps us better serve you.

4. YOUR TRIP EXPERIENCE

FLEXIBLE ITINERARY:

● The itinerary we provide is a flexible guide. Adjustments may be made by the tour leader to ensure everyone’s safety and enjoyment, especially in the case of changing weather, closures, or health requirements. Any changes will be made with the group’s overall experience in mind.

ROOMING ARRANGEMENTS:

● Accommodation details will be shared in your Booking Voucher. For solo travellers booking a twin/shared room, we will do our best to pair you with another traveller of the same gender.

● Sharing a Twin room: Please note, if we are unable to find a same-gender roommate for you, a Single Room upgrade will be required, and this will incur an additional charge. By booking a twin/shared room as a solo traveller, you acknowledge that this upgrade and its cost may apply if a roommate is unavailable.

FLIGHTS:

● In the event of flight cancellations or delays, we’re here to help where we can, so please keep it touch! Arranging alternative flights will be your responsibility. If a delay means missing part of the trip, please note that we’re unable to offer refunds.

Day 2: Sevilla

Day 2: Sevilla image

Uncover the secrets of Al Andalus

After breakfast, we'll take you to explore the highlights of Sevilla, including the Alcázar of Seville and La Giralda Tower.

You'll have some free time to explore and grab some lunch, before we begin the journey to Cordoba (around 1.5 hours).

Upon arrival in Cordoba, we'll check you into your hotel. Please note that we will be staying in the Old Town, so there is a limit as to how close the bus can get to the hotel. Please be prepared to walk on old paving stones with your suitcase (highly recommend getting a 4-wheeler).

It's worth it, so don't worry - your hotel location is perfectly positioned close La Mezquita de Cordoba, local cafes, restaurants and shops.

Once you've settled into your hotel, we will gather for a beautiful meal together at one of our favourite restaurants in Cordoba.

After dinner, we will enjoy a private session with Brother Sami Hamdi, on Why Al Andalus still matters today.

Meals included: Breakfast and dinner.

Overnight in Cordoba.

Day 3: Cordoba

Day 3: Cordoba image

"Cordoba the Pearl"

After breakfast, you'll begin uncovering the secrets of this ancient city, starting in the city's masterpiece, La Mezquita de Cordoba. Later, we'll continue on foot into the winding paths through the Jewish Quarter, to uncover more of the city's hidden gardens, ancient stones and fascinating stories. You'll have the chance to visit the beautiful floral patios of Cordoba and see how Islamic art and design still influences artisans, jewellers and leather-makers today.

For lunch, we've organised a beautiful halal meal prepared by a local Chef who incorporates a fusion of traditional family recipes with modern twists.

This afternoon, we've organised a Scavenger Hunt for you to explore and uncover more hidden gems in the historic Old Town. Be ready - there are prizes to be won!

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch.

Overnight in Cordoba.

Day 4: Madinat al Zahra

Day 4: Madinat al Zahra image

The Dazzling City That Now Sleeps Underground

This morning, you'll have some free time to explore Cordoba at your own pace. We'll aim to check out of the hotel by midday, before enjoying lunch together and then beginning the journey to Granada. But first, you will visit the long-lost city of Madinat al Zahra.

The city was sacked in 1010, less than seventy years after it was built, and the beautiful furnishings – down to even the marble slabs – were stolen or quarried. This is the largest city ever built from scratch in Western Europe, but chances are you’ve never even heard of it.

Later, we will continue on the road to Granada.

Journey time: Approx. 2.5 hours excluding stops.

Meals included: Breakfast and lunch.

Overnight in Granada.

Day 5: Granada

Day 5: Granada image

Reading the Walls of the Alhambra

Today you’ll experience something only few people who have visited Spain been fortunate enough to experience.

Our local expert and guide will host you in the Alhambra Palace, the most visited monument in Spain and the best Preserved Medieval Muslim Royal Palace in the World. Together with your guide, you will “Read the Alhambra”, by following the Arabic inscriptions on the walls. The hidden meanings, du’a, Qur’an, and poetry inscribed on these walls make the Alhambra one of the most unique forms of Islamic architecture in the world.

For lunch, we could arrange a buffet lunch in an open-air Muslim villa 10 minutes from Alhambra by bus (€20-€25). This is subject to group demand - we will poll you in the WhatsApp group in advance. After lunch, there will be some time to rest at the hotel.

In the evening, we will walk and explore the city centre and the Moroccan Bazar. Overnight in Granada.

Meals included: Breakfast.

Day 6: Granada

Day 6: Granada image

Fresh Air, Olive Groves and Orange Blossoms in the Alpujarra Mountains

After Breakfast we will make our trip to the Alpujarra mountains, where the last Muslims of Al Andalus were living and practicing Islam for more than 150 years after the conquest of Granada. New Muslims are living here now, where they nurture olive plantations which produce olive oil for the whole year, with the same olives once planted by the Muslims of the past. You’ll visit the traditional village of Pampaneira, where you can explore the carpet-weavers workshop and Chocolate Factory, as well as roam through the traditional houses, streets and architecture of this village. After lunch you’ll be able to walk through Orange Orchards and Olive Trees, before heading to the local Masjid to pray and meet the local Muslims.

Overnight in Granada.

Meals included: Breakfast.

Day 7 - Departure

Day 7 - Departure image

Airport Drop off in Malaga Airport

Granada-Malaga Airport

After breakfast, we will head to Malaga Airport according to the drop-off time. Please book a flight that departs after 12:00 in the afternoon, so that you have time to get to the airport without having to leave very early.

Thank you for exploring Andalucia with us!

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions image

About this trip

What makes this trip different from a standard tour of Andalusia?

The whole route is built around the Islamic heritage of Al-Andalus — not as a side note, but as the reason for the trip. You’ll read the Arabic inscriptions on the walls of the Alhambra with a specialist guide, explore La Mezquita de Cordoba and the Jewish Quarter, and spend an evening with Brother Sami Hamdi on why Al-Andalus still matters today.

You’ll also meet the Muslim community still living and farming in the Alpujarra mountains, where Islam survived for more than 150 years after the conquest of Granada. The group is made up of like-minded Muslim travellers, which shapes the whole feel of the trip.

Who tends to come on this trip?

A genuine mix — solo travellers, family, couples, and friends travelling together. Many guests are visiting Andalusia, or Spain, for the first time, and a shared interest in Islamic history and a preference for travelling without compromising on faith or modesty is what brings the group together.

Is this a good first solo trip?

Yes. The days are structured, your HTG group leader handles all the logistics, and travelling as part of a group means you’re never navigating an unfamiliar country alone.

On the itinerary

Which cities do we visit, and in what order?

The route runs Seville → Cordoba → Granada, finishing with departure via Malaga. You’ll spend one night in Seville, two in Cordoba, and three in Granada.

Why do we fly into Seville but out of Malaga?

The trip moves west to east across Andalusia, finishing in Granada — so it makes far more sense to fly out from nearby Malaga than to backtrack to Seville. When you book your flights, fly into Seville Airport for Day 1, and out of Malaga Airport on Day 7.

How much walking is involved, and what about my luggage?

You’ll be on your feet for a good part of most days, particularly in Cordoba and Granada, where the old quarters are pedestrianised and built on cobbled stone. In Cordoba specifically, our hotel is in the Old Town, and the coach can’t get all the way to the door — you’ll need to walk over old paving stones with your suitcase. We strongly recommend a 4-wheel “spinner” suitcase rather than a 2-wheel case for this stretch; it’s a short walk, and well worth it for the location.

Is there free time built in?

Yes. You’ll have free time to explore Seville and grab lunch on Day 2, a free morning in Cordoba on Day 4, and time to rest at the hotel after the Alhambra on Day 5, followed by a free evening to explore Granada’s city centre and the Moroccan Bazaar.

What’s the private evening with Brother Sami Hamdi about?

On the evening of Day 2 in Cordoba, after dinner, we’ve arranged a private session with Brother Sami Hamdi on why Al-Andalus still matters today — a chance to reflect on the history you’ve just spent the day walking through.

What’s Madinat al-Zahra, and why are we visiting?

A vast palace-city built from scratch outside Cordoba in the 10th century, then sacked and largely lost to history less than seventy years later — most visitors to Spain have never heard of it. You’ll visit on Day 4, en route from Cordoba to Granada.

Can the itinerary change?

It’s a flexible guide rather than a fixed script. Your group leader may adjust the order or timing of visits in response to weather, site closures, or traffic, always with the aim of giving you the best possible experience of each place.

Money on the ground

What currency does Spain use, and can I get it before I travel?

The Euro (€) — easy to exchange or order before you fly, or simply withdraw from an ATM after you land.

Can I use my card?

Yes, easily. Spain is very card-friendly — hotels, restaurants and most shops across Seville, Cordoba and Granada take card. It’s still worth carrying some cash for smaller cafés, markets, and tips.

Roughly how much spending money do I need?

Most guests budget €150–200 for the week, to cover dinners (not included), souvenirs, coffees and tips.

general icon

Power and connectivity

What plugs does Spain use?

European two-pin sockets (Type C/F), the same standard as the rest of the EU. UK travellers will need a UK-to-EU adaptor. Hotel rooms often have only one or two accessible sockets, so a small multi-socket plug is worth packing if you’re charging a phone, camera and power bank.

Is Wi-Fi reliable?

Yes, in all the hotels and most cafés. For data on the go, see the Airalo eSIM note on our main FAQ page — coverage across Andalusia is excellent.

general icon

Dress code and prayers

What’s the dress code for the Mezquita, Alcázar and Alhambra?

You’ll need to cover your head, shoulders, arms and legs at all of these sites. A pashmina or large scarf you can throw over an outfit and tuck into your day bag is the easiest setup — bring one, and you’re covered for the whole trip.

Is La Mezquita de Cordoba still used as a mosque?

No — La Mezquita now operates as Cordoba’s Catholic cathedral, and formal prayer isn’t conducted inside during the visit. You’re welcome to explore respectfully and reflect on its history and architecture; we’ll make sure the group prays at the hotel or over lunch on the days we visit.

How are the daily prayers organised?

We follow the sunnah of combining and shortening prayers (jam’ and qasr) while travelling, usually timed around our lunch stops. Maghrib and Isha are typically prayed at the hotel.

Do I need to bring my own prayer mat?

A small travel mat can be useful when you need to pray in your hotel room or when you're out during the trip.

general icon

Weather and packing

What’s the weather like in November?

Mild and pleasant by UK standards, but with real variation across the trip. Seville and Cordoba sit in the warmer south-west, with daytime temperatures generally in the mid-teens to low-20s°C.

Granada is noticeably cooler, especially in the evenings, sitting at the foot of the Sierra Nevada — and the Alpujarra mountains on Day 6 will be cooler still. Layers matter more on this trip than a single-city break would suggest.

Do I need waterproofs?

Yes — November is one of Andalusia’s wetter months, so pack a light waterproof jacket or a compact umbrella.

What clothing should I bring?

Lightweight layers you can add to or take off through the day, plus a warmer layer or light jacket for evenings, particularly in Granada and on the mountain day in the Alpujarras. The Andalusian sun is still strong even in November, so sunglasses and sunscreen are worth packing alongside your scarf for mosque and heritage site visits.

Is there anything specific I should pack that’s easy to forget?

  • a large scarf for the Mezquita, Alcázar and Alhambra

  • a UK-to-EU adaptor and a small multi-socket extension

  • a warm layer for Granada evenings and the Alpujarra mountains

  • broken-in walking shoes for Cordoba and Granada’s cobbled old quarters (a 4-wheel suitcase will also save you a headache in Cordoba)

  • and any personal medication, with a copy of your prescription

general icon

Visa

Do I need a visa for Spain?

It depends on your passport. US, UK and EU passport holders: no visa required for stays up to 90 days.

Other passports: check with the Spain embassy in your country, or contact us and we’ll point you in the right direction.

general icon

Tipping

Are tips expected?

Tips aren’t included in your trip price, but they’re standard in the region and a meaningful way to thank your driver and guides. As a guideline, around £2/$4 per day for the driver and £4/$8 per day for the local guide, given on their final day with the group.
